Mother of Pearl Plates for Families: Are They Kid-Friendly?

When I first bought mother of pearl plates, my husband asked, “Are you sure this is a good idea with a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old?” I get it—kids are messy, clumsy, and prone to dropping things. But after a year of using them with my family, I can say: yes, mother of pearl plates are kid-friendly, and here is why.
They are durable enough for little hands. My kids have dropped plates on the floor (wooden, thankfully), spilled juice on them, and even used them as “boats” for their toy cars. The plates have a few scratches, but no cracks or breaks. High-quality mother of pearl is sturdier than it looks—much more so than the thin ceramic plates we used before (which shattered if you looked at them wrong). I chose thicker plates (3mm) specifically for the kids, and they have held up perfectly.
They are easy to clean. Kids leave all kinds of messes—peanut butter, pasta sauce, chocolate. Mother of pearl wipes clean easily with mild soap and a sponge. No scrubbing, no staining—even dried-on food comes off with a little warm water. I do not let the kids put them in the dishwasher, but hand-washing is quick, and I have even let my 5-year-old help (supervised, of course). It is a good way to teach her responsibility.
They make mealtimes more fun. My kids call them “magic plates” because of the shimmer. Before, they would complain about eating veggies; now, they ask to put their broccoli on the “sparkly plate.” Anything that gets kids excited about eating healthy is a win in my book. They also love that each plate is unique—my son has a plate with more blue, my daughter prefers the one with pink. It makes them feel special, like their plate is just for them.
They are safe. Mother of pearl is a natural material, no chemicals or toxins. Unlike some plastic plates that can leach chemicals into hot food, these are safe for everything from cold yogurt to warm mac and cheese (let cool first). I checked with the brand to make sure they are food-safe, and they sent me a certificate—peace of mind for a mom.
I do have a few rules: no using plates as toys (most of the time), no carrying them while running, and no putting them in the microwave. The kids have learned the rules quickly, and it is taught them to be careful with their things. We also have a few cheap backup plates for extra-messy meals (like finger paint parties), but for everyday use, mother of pearl works great.
If you are a parent worried about nice dinnerware with kids, do not be. Mother of pearl plates are durable, safe, and fun—perfect for family mealtimes. They make even chicken nuggets feel special, and that is a gift for busy parents.
